Shanghai's GDP maintains two-digit growth

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-21 14:48:38

Chinanews, Shanghai, July 20 (By Xu Xiaoqing) - The latest statistics
published by Shanghai Bureau of Statistics today reveal that in the first
half, Shanghai's GDP reached 393.064 billion yuan (47.5 billion USD).
Calculated at comparable price, its GDP rose 10.3% year on year,
maintaining two-digit growth.
At today's routine press conference of Shanghai Municipal Government, Pan
Jianxin, director of the Shanghai Bureau of Statistics, indicated that
the National Bureau of Statistics has confirmed that in the first half of
this year, Shanghai's secondary industry achieved 211.739 billion yuan of
added value, up 11.2% while its tertiary industry's added value totaled
178.381 billion yuan, up 9.6%.
Based on Pan's analysis, Shanghai's economic growth is diverting from
high-speed growth in the past few years to stable, rapid increase
currently. He said that Shanghai's base of GDP has been high in the past.
This year, its structure of supply and demand in the market is changing
and industrial structure is under adjustment. Together with possible
energy shortage and frictions in international trade, Shanghai's economic
development in the future tends to be steady and a more stable economic
growth in will be seen the second half.

Warrants to arrive in China's stock markets

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-19 11:05:18

Chinanews, Beijing, July 17 (By Wei Xi) - The Shanghai Stock Exchange and
the Shenzhen Stock Exchange separately announced today that the China
Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) has approved the "provisional
measures on administration of warrants". This signifies that the
preparatory work for warrants has basically been completed and the
trading of warrants will officially land in China's stock markets after
many years.
China's shareholding rights restructuring is now in full swing and the
launch of warrants at this moment is quite opportune. Industry insiders
said that warrants provide a market pricing mechanism for shareholding
rights restructuring for publicly listed companies and a foundation for
equity and debt derivative products that will emerge in the future. At
the same time, warrants will provide a certain accelerant effect to
resolving the question of bonus options for senior management of publicly
listed companies.
People in charge of both the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges said
that China's equity products have relatively simple structure and
affected the market's efficiency and its turnover. A well-rounded stock
market needs various types of financial products with different
risk-reward profiles. And the warrants currently being launched are the
type of new products urgently needed by the market.
The "provisional measures on administration of warrants" that is being
published has detailed rules governing important questions such as
definition of warrants, category, issuance, listing, performance
security, transaction, exercise rights, settlement and punishment for
violation of relevant regulations. Compared with the public comments that
were solicited, the actual promulgated provisions are even stricter. The
effective period of warrants has been relaxed and credit guaranty has
been added to act as surety for performance and appropriately narrowed
the range that warrant prices can fluctuate, so that one can see its
maneuverability.

China's forex reserves likely to rank first

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-15 14:05:15

Chinanews, July 15 - CRI Online reported that due to the large trade
surplus in the first half, economists raised their anticipation on
China's foreign exchanges of this year.
Wang Zhihao, senior economist of the Standard Chartered Bank China, wrote
an article which predicts that China's foreign exchange reserves will
reach 913 billion US dollars at the end of this year. Zhong Wei, director
of the Finance Research Center with Beijing Normal University, also
believes that up to the end of this year, China's foreign exchange
reserves would probably exceed Japan's (Japan's forex reserves neared 850
billion US dollars at the end of 2004) and rank first in world.
Statistics released by the Customs General Administration recently
indicate that China's trade surplus reached nearly 40 billion US dollars
in the first six months, higher than the 32 billion US dollars record of
entire 2004. The rise of trade surplus, however, has not increased the
anticipation of RMB appreciation. Zhong Wei said that the slower import
growth was the main cause of the large trade surplus.

Wu Yi: Great achievements made in IPR protection

www.chinanews.cn 2006-04-18 17:29:37

Chinanews, Beijing, Apr. 18 C Chinese Vice Premier Wu Yi on Monday said
that Chinese government had attached great importance to, and had made
great achievements in intellectual property rights protection. She urged
governments at various levels to continue their work in this regard in
future.
The Vice Premier, who is also Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC
Central Committee and head of the State Intellectual Property Rights
Protection Working Team, made the remarks after attending an exhibition
held in Beijing Monday on China's achievements in intellectual property
rights protection.
She said that the exhibition provided ample evidence to prove that
Chinese government had put a lot of efforts into intellectual property
rights protection, and had achieved great results in the work.
Wu Yi said that in recent years, Chinese government had been working hard
in intellectual property rights protection. The efforts were
unprecedented and the achievement was great. However, she said, we should
keep in mind that intellectual property rights protection is a long-term
task, and we should view the task from a strategic point of view,
regarding IPR protection as part of our work of building an
innovation-oriented nation, and carry on our work with substantial
efforts in future.
The exhibition was kicked off Sunday at the Military Museum in Beijing.
It is the first time for China to organize such a large exhibition that
focuses on the country's IPR protection issue. The exhibition, which will
last for eight days, is organized by the State Intellectual Property
Rights Protection Working Team together with ten other state departments,
and undertaken by the State Intellectual Property Rights Protection
Working Team Office and the China Federation of Industrial Economics.
