Why are so many "high-end" women single?
www.chinanews.cn 2006-02-24 13:42:34
Chinanews, Shanghai, Feb. 24 (By Xu Xiaoqing) - High educational
background, high-level job, high income, high age bracket, high in
stature.these types of "high-end" Shanghainese women worry most about
not finding husbands! Shanghai Women's Federation today released to the
public a document titled "Survey and analysis of reasons why highly
educated females have difficulty finding mates". Experts believe that
numerous conflicts exist between traditional concepts and real-life
conditions, leading to the phenomenon of the more outstanding the woman,
the fewer marriage prospects she has.
"More than 85% of men hope their 'Other Half' are younger by at least
three years, and the older the men, the greater the age gap they want
between them and their women." Local sociologist Lu Jianmin undertook
four months of follow-up research for the subsidiary marriage bureau of
Shanghai Women's Federation and ended up discovering that quite a large
portion of the so-called "successful men" over 35 hope their "other half"
will be younger than they are by four to nine years, maybe even more than
ten years. Based on this, experts project that Shanghainese women over 32
face a greatly shrunk circle of marriage prospects.
The survey released today says that according to one series of
statistics, at present nearly 40% of Shanghainese women hope their "other
half" will have at least a master's degree. In contrast, less than one
percent expects their partners to have only a high school education.
Money, house, car, heightexperts believe the "inflation" of various
hardware standards for choosing mates have placed numerous obstacles in
front of Shanghai's women. The survey shows that the traditional practice
of "live in husband's house" is deeply ingrained in the psyche of
generations of Shanghainese. They expect the newlyweds to "live with
their parents" or some men hope "to buy a house together with their
female partners". These expectations made many of Shanghai's women
hesitate before the altar.
The survey also shows that less than one percent of Shanghai's women are
willing to choose mates under 1.65 meters in height. But matchmaking
bureau's registration data show that 4.6% of men looking for wives are in
this height category. In contrast, 13.4% of women seeking husbands are
taller than 1.7 meter. Experts believe that tall Shanghainese women's
unwillingness to marry short men have made many waste away their youthful
years.
